Class test.

We had an Effective Public Communication class test. The topics covered in the test are from one to 6. As soon as we had get know this news, I have started to read up on the Human Communication book. However, it was not as easy as I thought. Each topics are very long and difficult to understand. Thus, I could only try my best to read on the PowerPoint slides that were given by my lecturer, Mr. Woon.

During the test, there are some questions that I could not answer and had no choice but to leave them blank. Surprisingly, the marks I get for this test are not very low. However, I felt that I need improve my weakness on the method I revise my studies. Lastly, this test had taught me lesson which is that I should revise for my final examination earlier.

Individual essay assignment.

As for this assignment, we were required to write an essay by applying the theories learned in Effective Public Communication and it is an individual task. The intended learning outcomes for this assignment are to be able to explain the basic ideas of each chosen topic with reference to the related theories learned in this course. And, to prove mastery of the topic and ability to express this in the form of an academic essay with proper APA citations and referencing.

In order to achieve these learning outcome, we must be able to apply the right theories and explained it based on the relevant topic. We must also be able to do the proper citations and referencing for the sources we had use.

The topic I had chosen for this essay is “Even when nonverbal cues are used in text-based messages, communicating online can still lead to misunderstandings. Look at the differences between communicating online and communicating face-to-face and examine how vocal cues are important to communication”. I felt that this assignment are quite challenging as you have to apply the correct concept into it. In my opinion, my strength on doing this assignment was that I had searched many books in the library to obtained relevant information on this topic given. The books I have borrowed from the library had help me out a lot. The best strategy to complete this assignment is by doing some research and find more reliable sources earlier before you start your essay. However, I need to improve on the understanding of the topics taught in the subject.

This assignment is a group work whereby we were required to form a group of 4 to 5 people. We were required to do an illustration or drama script of EPC concepts on one of the topics listed below with an oral presentation. The intended learning outcomes of this assignment are 2 and 4. We need to be able to explain the basic ideas of each chosen topic and to use new examples or situations relevant to the chosen topic in the form of dialogues or graphics and report and derive an informed opinion on the current state of the business’ operation to explain the topic. In addition, we need to prove the mastery of the topic by the compilation of knowledge through graphics/dialogue scripts.

To achieve these learning outcomes, we must have enough creativity to make a story and apply the principles from the topic. We must be able to explain the why the situations can be applied in the principles. We must also have the skills to draw a good comic or write a good scripts.

My group members for this assignment are Karyn Wong, Sharon Wong, Tan Youen and Kin Vui. The topic we had chosen was the Organizational Communication. The principles in this topic are Upward Communication, Horizontal Communication, Communication and Organizational Change and Informal Communication. We had also chosen to draw a comic for this assignment. As my drawing skills are not that good, I felt that it is quite difficult for me. Thus, my weakness on this assignment are the lack of skills to draw a comic. So, I was assigned by my group leader to do the story board. The best strategy to complete this assignment is by having a good cooperation with the group members. We had did all the discussion and completed this assignment together. I have to improve on drawing skills so that I could I help out my group members more.

Introduction to Business

Introduction to Business

The topic which I love the most in Introduction to Business is the “Developing Marketing Strategies”. This topic is about how a business develops marketing strategies in order to sell their product well. It involves creating and designing a product that customers want, communicating the product to the customers via advertising or promotion and distributing the product to the customers. It is my favorite topic because the subunits in this topic is very interesting and easy to understand as compared to other topics. In addition, it can be very useful if I wanted to start a business and to sell my product well.

My least favorite topic is the first topic, “Welcome to Introduction to Business” which talks about the introduction of the subject. It was about the definitions of the business, the functions of a business, major forms of business and environmental factors affecting a business. I don’t really like it because it is a quite boring topic to me and we can already see it in everyday life what is taught in the topic. I would make the topic looks more interesting by adding in more real life case of businesses which can be found in the newspaper. Sometimes, using the examples of real business will attract me more.

 Last of all, the topic which I felt the most useful in everyday life and in my future studies is the “Business Ethics and Social Responsibility”. It is about the ethics of what is right and wrong in different society, we had also studied about the areas of business ethics and social responsibility, also the approaches of a business to the social responsibility. This topic that I have learnt can be useful because we should follow the ethics according to the situations and places we are in to show respect to others. Well, as for my future studies, social responsibility can be useful because everyone of us are responsible to maintain the equality of the social world.

In conclusion, I really enjoyed learning this subject and doing the charity drive. I also appreciate very much the patience and guidance of my beloved lecturer, Mr. Joe.

Basic Accounting

In basic accounting, my favourite topic is the Profit & Loss Statement. The topic of profit & loss statement is about an accounting report that shows the profit or loss of business generated during an accounting period. It is my favorite topic because it was fun constructing the table and filling in the figure we have done in the double-entry recording. Every time when the lecturer, Mr. Joe had given us some exercise on this topic, I would feel good if the total of profit or loss that I have counted are right.

On the other hand, the topic which I does not like the most is the Financial Ratios. This topic is about the financial analysis and interpretations, profitability ratios and financial stability ratios whereby these will help the users (e.g. owners, managers, lenders) to focus only on the important information and make business decisions. It is my least favorite topic because it is very hard to remember and memorize all the formula to count the profitability ratios and financial stability ratios, furthermore, I felt that the interpretations are quite confusing. Thus, I had struggled a lot on this topic. If I could make the topic better, I would think of some creative ways for the student to remember all the stuffs that they need to learned. For example, use more creative and daily life examples in the subtopics. In addition, I would also give more exercises to the students for them practice more.

Last but not least, I find that the last topic taught by our lecturer which is about the different forms of ownership are the most useful in my everyday life and also for my future studies. The reason behind this is that in future when I wanted to do a business, I have already understand clearly about the forms of ownership which I can apply for my business and so, I do not have to be afraid about not knowing anything. As for my everyday life, I could help out my parents on their businesses and perhaps this topic can be useful in my future studies as a reference on some subjects that I need to learn.

Finally, I would like express my gratitude to Mr. Joe who are very patient and attentive throughout the semester.

Principles of Economies

Principles of Economies

As for the subject, Principles of Economies the topic that I love the most is the Price Theory of Demand. This topic is about how buyers decide when buying goods or services, and other factors that influence their decisions. It is my favorite topic among all is because it is interesting, quite easy to understand and I could learnt as a buyer, how do I decide when buying something, also how does the price affects the response from the buyers.

While, my least favorite topic is the Market Competition. It is about the characteristics of the markets in economies which are divided into 4 categories according to the strength of the competition in that market. For examples, the 4 categories are monopoly, oligopoly, monopolistic competition and perfect competition. I don’t really like it was due to that this topic are divided into three parts and it is a very long topic. And, it was very hard to store it in my brain instantly. If I could make this topic to look more attractive, I would use almost the same way as how my lecturer, Mr. Joe had done which is by giving us a cheat sheet. Also, it would be better to have more in class exercise. However, if this topic can be shorter in some ways and thus, it would be better.

As a final point, the topic which I find the most useful and applicable to my everyday life and future studies is the first topic, the introduction of Principles of Economies. Through this topic, I had learned how important is the economies of a country or anyone that could affect us. It is very useful in my everyday life because I had learned to think twice before making a decisions especially when it involves the managing of scarce or limited resources. While for my future studies, I guess this topic would be applicable during my internship as I need to clearly know how to make important decisions.

Lastly, I had enjoyed myself in the class and I love the way how my lecturer had given his lectures for this subject. I would like to thank Mr. Joe for being such a nice and attentive lecturer.

Class Assignment 1

The broccoli I bought for the assignment.

The first class assignment that was given by our lecturer, Mr. Woon was about observing a type of vegetable and write an essay about it. The vegetable I had chosen was broccoli. When we were told during class that we should only write down what was being observed by using our five senses, I was shocked and lost. At first, it was difficult and I had struggled for some time. Then after a few days, I tried to start looking carefully at the broccoli while writing down what I had observed. Step by step, using the sense of hearing, touch, see, smell and taste, I started to realise it was actually quite fun and interesting.

That night, I had finished jotting the observations I have made within a few hours. Then I started to do my essay and completed it by the next day. I felt a relief after I have completed this assignment as it was quite challenging to me a first. However, with the help and guidance from my lecturer, Mr. Woon, I have successfully completed this assignment and obtained good results.

Class assignment 2.

In this assignment, we were required to compare any two English language drama series or programme series. There are two intended learning outcomes for this assignment. The first learning outcome is the discipline specific knowledge, which says about the foundation knowledge in relevant subjects and to understand ethical issues in the context of the field of studies. Another learning outcome is the lifelong learning. It required us to locate and extract information effectively, also relate learned knowledge to everyday life.

In order to achieve these intended learning outcomes, we have to find the correct and precise information for the relevant topic given. We also need be well disciplined and avoid any intention to plagiarise other people’s work.

The two movies I had chosen to contrast were “The King’s Speech” and “The Young Victoria”. These are both famous historical movies, however there are still a lot of differences between them. My weakness in writing this compare or contrast essay are that I am not very certain about the format and I have done some grammatically mistakes. Therefore, I felt that the best strategy to write a good essay is to read more and practice more. I hope to improve my vocabulary and strengthen my way of writing an essay.

Class assignment 3.

The third class assignment that was given by my lecturer, Mr. Woon is the class debate. Whereby, we were asked to form a group and debate about a specific topic with our opponent. My group mates are Yeo Hui Zhen and Wong Yii Shin. The topic that was assigned to us was “Philippines is not being a good neighbour to Malaysia”.

At first, when I look at the topic I felt that we certainly couldn’t get a lot of information and I am so worried as I have never done a debate before. After some discussion with my group mates. We decided to do some research about this topic through some e-newspaper. Surprisingly, it was not that difficult to find the information relate to this topic. After that, we started to write down the points and divide it among our group members.

On the day of the class debate, the three of us were very nervous and we were trembling. We were the first group and we could just try our best to perform the debate. However, my group did not done very well and I am quite disappointed to myself. My weakness on this assignment are that I do not have enough confidence while speaking infront especially when I have to argue with an opponent. Thus, I will try to practice harder and improve myself on the speaking task.

Assignment 2

For the assignment 2, it was a group work and we were required to prepare a research paper based on the site that we have visited. The intended learning outcomes for this assignment are 1, 2 and 3. These learning outcomes are as follow, to  identify the key issues in the question and explain them clearly and logically, next, to demonstrate the ability to prepare questionnaires and interviews to obtain information about the topic. In addition, do demonstrate the ability to analyse and synthesize information and compile them in the report. Moreover, to communicate the relevant ideas and analysis in clear, logical and appropriate academic English. Lastly, to select and present infomation clearly and appropriately to one’s target audience.

Thus, to achived these intended learning outcomes, we should be able to analyse the requirement for the research report. We also must be able to get the right information through the interview conducted and from other sources.

My group mate is Wong Li Hui Amy and the area we have decided to do research on is the pastry businesses. The first shop that we did research on is Ming Xiang Tai Pastry Shop, Penang. The second and third shops are based in Klang Valley, which are the Mr. Siew Bao Sunway Pyramid and Cookie Box Empire Shopping Gallery Subang. Therefore, my weakness on this assignment are that I am not very clear about the format of a research report and I could not find a lot sources to complete my report. Hence, I hope to improve in the ability to recognise the format of a report and writing skills. Finally, I would like to express my gratitude to my lecturer, Mr Woon for being patient and attentive throughout this semester.

Mathematics

Mathematics.

During one of our Mathematics class, we had been given a class assignment by our lecturer, Ms. Ann. The task required us to construct the object, do some calculations for the object's total surface area and calculate the volume of the object. My group members for the class hand outs are Tan Ming Long, Joshua Ting, Cheah Hoong Fei, See Cul Wei, Ong Kok Sheng and Phang June Ee. The diagram below shows the task given by our lecturer, Ms. Ann.

 

The first formula we had use to count the object are the Length Of Arc. The arc length is the measure of the distance along the curved line making up the arc. It is longer than the straight line distance between its endpoints (which would be a chord). We had apply this formula when we are counting the arc length of the surface of the two combined cylinders.

Next, we had use the Pythagoras theorem to count the right-angle triangle side of the object. In a right angled triangle : the square of the hypotenuse is equal to
the sum of the squares of the other two sides. We had apply this formula to find the slanted height of the triangle hidden in the object.

Lastly, another theory we had use to do the calculations of volume of the object are Volume of Pyramid. It’s definition is the number of cubic units that will exactly fill a pyramid. We had apply this theory to find the volume of the pyramid in the object.

              

 

Finally, this is the real object that we have constructed after finishing our calculations. At first, I had struggled on this task and it looks very challenging. However, after I have looked through the notes given by Ms. Ann, I found out that it is just sorting each of the components in the object and apply the formula. As it is group work, it had become easier. Thank you to all my group members for their effort. Last but not least, after completing this assignment, it had become easier to learn something about the topic on areas and volume.

Social Psychology - Assignment 2

Assignment 2 - Article & Advertisement Analysis

The second assignment given by our beloved lecturer, Ms. Tan is doing a article or advertisement analysis. This task required us to form a group of 4 to 5 people and search for article or advertisement in the newspaper or magazine which then, can be relate to the concepts or theory we have learned in Chapter 6 to 10. We are asked to work in group and discuss the assignment together.

We had been given short briefing about what is required in this assignment and what is the intended learning outcomes (ILOs) we need to achieve through assignment. There are 3 learing outcomes we need to achieve, which is lifelong learning, thinking and problem solving skills, also communication skills.

We need to know how to locate and extract information effectively then, relate learned knowledge to everyday life so that we can achieve the intended learning outcome of lifelong learning.

Next, we need to learn to think critically and creatively, also, we need to know how to define and analyse problems to arrive at effective solutions so that we can achieve the second intended learning outcome of thinking and problem solving skills.

Lastly, we must be able to communicate appropriately with our group members so that we can achieve the intended learning outcome of communication skills.

Overall, this assignment really helps a lot in understanding the theory and concepts from the related chapters. I love reading newspaper so it is not very difficult for me to find the articles needed in completing this assignments. 

After that, we are also required to do a presentation in a group for each of the topic with one article. 

However, it is not as easy as we think. And I felt that my greatest weakness is doing a presentation infront of people. I felt that I spoke too softly and I should improve in my presentation skills. I also need to have more confidence. 

Finally, I would like to thank Ms. Tan for helping me out in this assignment when I met with some uncertainties and obstacles.

Social Psychology

Assignment 1 - Journal

The first assignmnet given by our dear lecturer, Ms. Tan is writing a journal. This task required us to write something that had happened before in our life and then, relate it back to the situation with the theory that we have learned in Social Psychology class.

My lecturer, Ms. Tan had patiently give us a short briefing about what we need to do and what is the intended learning outcomes (ILOs) of this assignment. 

The first intended learning outcome is lifelong learning, whereby we could learn how to locate and extract information effectively. Also, we could relate learned knowledge to everyday life. 

Second, it is the thinking and problem solving skills, in which, we could learn how to think critically and creatively. In addition, we could learn how to define and analyse problems to arrive at effective solutions.

After I have completed the journal, I felt that Social Psychology is not a very boring and dull subject after all. Since I could better understand the concept, I am beginning to take some interest in the subject.

 I also realised that Social Psychology is actually a part of our everyday life, everything we did can almost be related back to the concept in this subject. Sometimes, a few theories can be applied in a small situation. 

However, my weakness in this assignment that I have to improved is that I am not being very specific about the situation I have experienced.

Therefore, I realised that the best strategies in learning this subject is by paying full attention to all the lecture taught by our lecturer in the class. It is much more easier to understand by listening to the lecturer rather than just plain reading. 

I felt that I need to improve the ways how I wrote my story, to be more specific and clear about what I want to expressed.

Hence, I want to say thank you to Ms. Tan for her patience and passion.
